What I’ve learned about whisky

  • Don’t waste good whisky on getting drunk.
  • Generally speaking: Scotch for celebrating, Bourbon for drowning your sorrows.
  • Good whisky should be drunk neat. If it were meant to be drunk with a splash or on the rocks, they’d bottle it at a lower proof and tell you to refrigerate it.
  • The best Bourbon is like a good barbecue sauce: sweet and spicy.
  • The best Scotch is like a complete meal.
  • If you’re going to drink them all in one sitting, the proper order is: Irish, regular-proof Bourbon/rye, non-Islay Scotch, high-proof Bourbon/rye, Islay Scotch.
  • Don’t try to compare Irish to Scotch to Bourbon. Just don’t.
  • If you can’t taste the difference, don’t buy it.
  • Whisky is always better with a friend.
  • Even the best whisky is worth nothing in the bottle.
